New Smith County Book to be Published
Nov. 25, 2006 - The Smith County Genealogical Society announces that the eagerly anticipated publication, Smith County, Mississippi and Its Families, Volume II is in final stages for printing and should be available by mid-December of this year. Society President, Charlotte Webb says that the book, like Volume I published in 2003, will be a hardbound edition and include over 500 submissions for family and military veterans as well as for communities, businesses, and organizations, churches and schools.
Webb says that Volume II was a "given" after the response to Volume I. She says the Society continues to emphasize that it is important that family and county history be preserved before being lost, and it was with this intent that this undertaking was done. All items included in Volume II are new and not found in Volume I; so, this is an entirely new book and historical material. People with ties now or in the past to Smith County contributed in their own words family histories, many with photos, for today's researcher as well as future generations. She says the Society is grateful for those who did take the time and contribute to this effort.
Genealogy is now one of the most popular past times in the country as people want to know more about their ancestry and family heritage. Smith County was one of the major areas settled and inhabited by families coming out of the Carolinas to Georgia to Alabama and on into Mississippi. Many families later made the move on west to Louisiana and Texas. This book will help many researchers looking at families that were part of this time in our country's expansion.
