Garthia Burnett Remembers . . .

Garthia Burnett, assistant news editor of the Commercial Dispatch, remembers what it was like growing up as an African-American in the Columbus area as she reflects on the African-American Heritage Tour she took Saturday which was sponsored by the Columbus Historic Foundation. It's a very interesting editorial!

Celebrating a Century

Elizabeth "Tillie" Wyndham Ellenberg of Columbus celebrated her 100th birthday a few weeks early. She was born in Gordo, Alabama in 1907. The Commercial Dispatch article details her life.

First Decoration Day in Columbus - 1862

In a Sun-Times article dealing mostly with the namesake of Cleburne County, Arkansas, we find an account of the first decoration day in Columbus, Mississippi (Lowndes County). It begins:

Honnoll related a story about the first Decoration Day in Columbus,
Mississippi, in 1862. "After the Battles of Shiloh and Corinth the ladies of
Columbus went to the cemetery where their loved ones that were killed in the
resent battles of the war were buried."

Recommendations from the Mississippi Dept. of Archives and History to the National Register of Historic Places include:

Columbus' Owen-Richardson-Owen House (1907) - Original owner was a commercial nursery owner.

Tallahatchie County's 2nd District Courthouse (1910) - great architectural details and Emmitt Till's trial

Newton County's American Legion Post No. 89 Hut (1934) - rustic, built of logs

Gulfport's Turkey Creek Community Historic District (1870s) - founded by freed slaves
