Newton County Book

Newton County Historical and Genealogical Society is announcing the publication of World War II Veterans, Newton County, compiled by Terry Lange and Harold Graham. Copies may be purchased for $50 plus $5 shipping and handling until April 15 from the society. Their address is: 17222 Mississippi 503, Decatur, MS 39327. Historic Register Candidates

Recommendations from the Mississippi Dept. of Archives and History to the National Register of Historic Places include:

Columbus' Owen-Richardson-Owen House (1907) - Original owner was a commercial nursery owner.

Tallahatchie County's 2nd District Courthouse (1910) - great architectural details and Emmitt Till's trial

Newton County's American Legion Post No. 89 Hut (1934) - rustic, built of logs

Gulfport's Turkey Creek Community Historic District (1870s) - founded by freed slaves
